I just finished reading a blog of another photographer and acquaintance http://foxdenimages.blogspot.com/ . In her post she talks about combining black and white and color images for some interesting effects, I would suggest going and reading it as well.
This is a topic I have thought about a lot lately and even talked to some friends about the concept of black and white and composition. First let me talk about composition.
I see dozens of photos of other photographers every day. Far too many attempt to include too many elements in a scene. Often then the composition becomes busy and confusing to the eye. It doesn’t matter if you follow the so called rules if there are too many things conflicting for the viewers attention. When looking at a scene it helps to visualize what an elements adds to the scene. Does it add or detract from a scene.
So many times it is difficult to separate ourselves from our work. We like it because we did it and not because it is good. Try to look at your work from the perspective of others.
Along the same lines color often interferes with a good photo. If you haven’t ever dabbled in black and white give it a try. This is often a test as to whether or not a composition stands on it’s own.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again experiment with editing and have fun trying new things.
